Billings Studio Theatre originated as a Sunday evening play-reading group in the homes of passionate early members. As membership in the fledgling theatre group grew, donations of space by Eastern Montana College and the YWCA allowed the group to become a firmly established part of the community. As time passed, the group expanded to producing plays on radio and on stage. They also started conducting workshops in radio production, makeup, accents, dialects, and many other facets of the theatre and dramatic arts.

The first play presented was “There’s Always Juliet” in September of 1953. In the 50’s and early 60’s plays were presented at Eastern Montana College, (EMC), now called Montana State University-Billings, (MSU-B), and Rocky Mountain College, (RMC).

In 1963 the group decided that Billings Studio Theatre needed a home and a remodeled church in downtown Billings. In 1968 the church building was condemned and fund raising efforts began to build Billings Studio Theatre a permanent home.

February of 1971 construction began on BST’s current home at 1500 Rimrock Road. Construction was completed in the fall of the same year and the first production in the new facility was “Man of La Mancha” that November.

As Billings Studio Theatre continues on in its second half century of theatrical excellence, we hope that you will join us in the magic and excitement of community theatre.
